iQFOiL Games #4 Conclude in Silvaplana: High-Altitude Challenge Meets World-Class Foiling

Silvaplana, Switzerland – August 24, 2025

The 2025 Vanora EngadinWind iQFOiL International Games came to a close in Silvaplana after a week of contrasts: breathtaking scenery, high anticipation, and world-class racing tempered by the challenges of mountain weather. From August 18 to 24, athletes from around the globe gathered at 1,800m above sea level to test themselves against both each other and the elements.

The event opened with a spectacular day of racing as the famous Maloja wind filled in strongly, delivering five exhilarating races for every fleet. With speeds topping 20 knots, the day showcased the very best of iQFOiL: fast, technical, and adrenaline-fueled. After that, however, the mountains reminded everyone of their power. For several days the wind proved too unstable for official racing, creating a test of patience for competitors.

Even without full racing, the unique location brought its own lessons. Racing at high altitude is not like racing at sea level. With around 20% less oxygen in the air, sailors faced physiological challenges such as faster fatigue, slower recovery, and the need for greater hydration. Cognitive sharpness and fine motor skills—so crucial for split-second tactical decisions and foiling precision—were also tested. The venue therefore demanded not only technical mastery on the water but also adaptation and resilience from every athlete.

When the Maloja returned on the final day, the wait was rewarded. Strong winds allowed the Race Committee to complete the opening series before heading into the Medal Series Finals, where the top contenders fought for podium positions in a spectacular showcase of skill and determination. Crashes, tactical battles, and high-speed duels delivered the excitement everyone had been waiting for.
