The first stop of the Danish iQFoil Championships was sailed last weekend in fantastic conditions in Nivaa, north of Copenhagen.
Saturday, water was flat with gusty winds from shore, allowing for two slalom rounds in 6-14 kts in the morning and three course races in 8-20 kts in the afternoon.
Sunday started light again with winds of 4-10 kts. Three slalom rounds were sailed but as the side-shore winds picked up, a course race was set instead. 4 course races were completed in perfect, sunny 14-20 kts with ~0.7 m of waves that made the downwind leg very challenging (and entertaining). On the port-tack downwind, across the waves, even the best sailors went airborne, resulting in some spectacular and entertaining crashes (with no injuries to neither sailors nor equipment).
In the end, the Men’s division was won narrowly by GER-404 @Fabi Wolf, with U21-sailor @Johan Søe taking second place ahead of @Mads Jepsen. The Women’s division was won by @Sofie Torngaard Hammeken ahead of @Trine Bentzen.
21 men and 5 women competed for this first stop while the U17 junior fleet will join from the second stop of the series in Ebeltoft May 29-30th.
All events are open to foreigners that comply with current Covid-19 regulations.
